Vocabulary to Describe the Individual Tooth

Posted .

If you are visiting the dentist soon or want to describe a tooth-related issue to someone, it helps to understand the various spaces along the outer parts of your teeth. That’s why Ron Hernandez, DDS in Fremont, California has some vocabulary words to help you along:

Crown: The top part of the tooth, or that part which is below the gumline. This is not to be confused with artificial dental crowns which dental labs create to cover and protect your teeth. The shape of the crown determines a tooth’s function. For instance, sharp incisors are used for cutting, whereas molars are used for chewing.

Gum line: This is the place where the crown and the gums meet. It’s important to take care of your gums to avoid plaque building along the gum line. Otherwise, you may develop gum disease.

Root: Did you know that two-thirds of your tooth is buried in your jawbone? The root of the tooth functions like an anchor, steadying it in its place.

We hope that these words help you to feel more confident, whether you are articulating any concerns with Dr. Ron Hernandez or talking with a friend in dental school. If you have any other questions about vocabulary to describe teeth or are worried about various symptoms you may be experiencing, please don’t hesitate to phone 510-248-4847. We’re here to serve.
