The internal structures of each of your teeth is protected by a layer of tooth enamel. Tooth enamel gets its amazing strength from densely packed microscopic mineral crystals. This is what gives your teeth the strength and durability to bite off, chew and grind hard foods. The integrity of these mineral crystals helps to prevent the bacteria in your mouth from forming the pockets of tooth decay, commonly known as cavities.
Unfortunately, it is possible for the acidic foods and beverages you consume, and the pervasive process of bacteria to erode these microscopic mineral crystals. This opens up surface areas that can host tooth decay, or even create microscopic channels through the enamel, making your teeth sensitive to hot, cold, sweet and acidic foods.
Without sufficient fluoride exposure enamel erosion can create microscopic channels through the enamel, exposing the sensitive dentin layer of the tooth. This often includes symptoms like sharp pain when you eat or drink something that is hot, cold, sweet or acidic.
Should Ron Hernandez, DDS and our team in Fremont, California, notice that your tooth sensitivity issues are related to enamel erosion, we might recommend a basic fluoride treatment or fluoride supplements. Using a toothpaste with added fluoride will also go a long way towards strengthening your tooth enamel and reducing tooth sensitivity.
