Strong Tooth Enamel Is Important for Cavity Prevention

Posted .

Your tooth enamel is composed of a complex matrix of microscopic mineral crystals. Its density gives your teeth the ability to effectively break down food while also resisting the effects of tooth decay.

If you consistently struggle to maintain good oral hygiene practices the plaque acids in your mouth could start to demineralize your tooth enamel. This could allow small cavities to develop on multiple teeth and even lead to eventual tooth loss.

If your routine dental checkup with Dr. Ron Hernandez reveals signs of compromised tooth enamel he might recommend administering a basic fluoride treatment. This can help bolster the mineral density of your teeth to prevent future cavities.

Dr. Hernandez can administer the fluoride treatment in a few minutes by pouring concentrated fluoride gel into special mouth-shaped trays. They will need to be held in your mouth for a few minutes to allow the gel to fully permeate the microscopic pores of your tooth enamel. It’s best to avoid eating or drinking for at least half an hour after the fluoride treatment.

If Dr. Hernandez has further concerns about the strength of your tooth enamel, he might also provide you with a prescription for a fluoride supplement. This often comes in the form of a prescription-grade concentrated fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash.
