Five Spring and Summer Sports That Need Smile Protection

Posted .

If you find yourself being active during the warm spring and summer months, it’s important to think of your smile. There are many activities in the world today that threaten your oral health. So, if you participate in any of the following sports, your dentist, Dr. Ron Hernandez, recommends protecting your pearly whites with a mouthguard:

Bicycling
While you are riding your road bike, mountain bike, or even BMX bike, there is a chance that something in the road can alter the progression of your wheels and send you crashing into the ground. If you hit face first into the ground, the hard objects can knock your teeth out of place or even misalign your jaw. This is why wearing a mouthguard is a good idea.

Skateboarding
Skateboarding can be extremely dangerous for your smile. If something stops the wheels and sends you flying, there is a high chance that you will experience an oral injury. However, your teeth will be protected if you wear a mouthguard.

Volleyball
Even though volleyball isn’t a high-contact sport, the ball can be spiked at your mouth at any point of the game, resulting in harm. So, if you want a beautiful smile and proper bite, please wear a mouthguard while you play.

Baseball/Softball
Baseball and softball are two sports that can threaten your smile without you realizing it. At any point of the game, the ball can be hit, thrown, or pitched at your mouth, which can be scary because it can result in cracked, chipped, or broken teeth. So, please wear a mouthguard.

Surfing
Many people don’t see surfing as a threat to their smile because they are surrounded by water. If you are one of these people, think of the surfboard and the ocean ground. When you crash, the wave can send the board up toward your face or it can send you face first into the ground. These are times when a mouthguard would be extremely beneficial.
