Oral care is extremely important, especially if you want your child to grow into a strong and healthy smile, but sometimes parents aren’t sure what they need to do to help their child. If you could be considered as one of these parents, we have some suggestions for you!
Bring your child in for a checkup
We recommend bringing your child in for their first checkup when they turn 1 or 6 months after their first tooth has erupted. This appointment is very beneficial because it helps your child feel more and more comfortable in the hands of the dentist. It is also beneficial because it gives you the chance to talk to your dentist about your dental questions. This is a great time to find out how you can help your child grow into the best smile possible.
Teach your child good oral hygiene habits
You can teach your child good oral hygiene habits even before their first tooth grows in. You can gently brush your child’s gums with a toothbrush and water or you can clean the gums with a washcloth. When your child’s teeth appear, brush them twice a day and begin flossing when two of their teeth have touched each other. As they get older, teach them to brush every morning and every night, floss once a day, and rinse their mouth with child-approved mouthwash daily.
Avoid Baby Bottle Tooth Decay
Baby Bottle Tooth Decay generally occurs when you put your child to bed with a bottle of juice, milk, or formula. To avoid this dental problem, send your child to bed with a bottle of water. It will also help if you limit your child’s juice intake throughout the day. If they consume 4 ounces of 100 percent fruit juice, they are on the right track.
Control the use of the sippy cup
Sippy cups are very helpful, but they can also cause trouble if they are used too often, especially if they are filled with sugary liquids. The sippy cup and sugary liquids can easily create tooth decay behind your child’s front teeth.
