Dry Socket: Signs And Solutions

Posted .

After you have a tooth extracted, it is important to take care of the extraction site. Doing so is important in protecting the formation of the blood clot which aids healing in this area. If the blood clot is dislodged, then the bone and nerves of the extraction site are exposed, which can cause pain and infection called dry socket.

Signs Of Dry Socket

You usually know if you have dry socket because of the severe pain it causes. There are also a few other signs which indicate that you have developed a dry socket such as:

  • Seeing the loss of the blood clot.
  • Having a bad taste in your mouth or bad breath.
  • Seeing exposed bone in the extraction site.
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes around your neck and jaw.
  • Having a fever.

Solutions To Dry Socket

If you are showing signs of a dry socket, see your dentist as soon as you can for treatments for the pain and infection such as:

  • Flushing out the socket to clean out food and other debris.
  • Applying a medicated dressing to the area that will need to be changed daily until the pain reduces and the extraction site begins to heal.
  • Taking anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen.
